I have spent the last month (as of June 14, 2004) converting a dobro resonator 
bass I bought into a 2-string slide bass so that I could properly play Morphine 
songs (Plus, it seemed like an interesting way to learn).  You can technically 
pull this off with any bass; the real trick was setting the action, figuring out
the tuning,and figuring out which strings to use.  

To do a Morphine song properly, take the G and E strings off of your bass, and 
tune your A string up to D and your D string up to A.  An alternative method 
would be to just play the D and G strings, tuning the G up to A.  This is the
easier method, but is not as consistent with how Sandman played.  Strum the 
chords with a pick (flamenco strumming works here too) and hit the notes using 
a slide.

I am about 95% sure, after a good bit of research, that this is how he played.


Like Swimming doesn't require a slide.

That's the song.  You could get away with just playing the D string notes, since
those are the root notes.  But it sounds cooler when you strum the chord.  This
is the first of many Morphine songs I plan to learn and tab out correctly.  Most
Morphine songs are fairly simple, it was really just the matter of figuring out
the correct tuning and all of that.  Anyways, more to come.
